Rick’s Burger Pit was a real, locally owned burger restaurant that operated on Mission Street in Santa Cruz during the early 1960s through the early 1970s. It was founded in 1961 by M.L. “Rick” Ricketts, a Navy veteran who moved to Santa Cruz with his family and opened the spot as a classic roadside burger stand.
The restaurant was part of the postwar wave of small California diner-style businesses, serving simple staples like burgers, fries, and shakes in a casual, drive-in–style setting that reflected the era’s car culture and booming coastal communities.
Although Rick’s Burger Pit closed by around 1973, it left behind a small but meaningful legacy as one of Santa Cruz’s many “lost” local eateries—places that helped define the city’s personality during a different era.
Today, it’s remembered mostly through local records and nostalgic references, representing a time when independent, family-run burger spots were central to everyday life in the community.
This fitted t-shirt delivers a soft feel with a clean, modern look. Made from a cotton-poly blend, it’s lightweight, breathable, and built to hold its shape and color over time. Whether worn on its own or layered, it’s an easy everyday staple.
