Melio’s Pizza was a classic, independently run Italian spot in Santa Cruz, active during the 1960s and into the early 1970s under the ownership of Mel Coppi. It had that true old school, family run charm, serving simple, traditional food in a tight knit neighborhood setting where everyone felt like they belonged.
Mel ran the place from the kitchen and the floor, while his wife Teresa added her own unforgettable personality, greeting guests with handshakes and kisses, then shouting across the restaurant to Mel and calling him a son of a bitch before following it up with a kiss. That lively and authentic energy made Melio’s more than just a pizza place, it was a memorable slice of Santa Cruz history.
